We have been seeing a lot of healthy bass and the future of the lake looks bright ,” Liechty explained .

New Melones Lake level has dropped 5.50 ft . the last two weeks , currently at 1052.10 ft . and 35.90 ft . from full . The water temperature across the lake is 68-70 degrees .

Trout Plants Boost Catches

IONE – Plants of 2,000 pounds of rainbow trout every week during May have improved the trout action at Pardee Lake .

“ Once May is over we will continue to evaluate how much we should plant based on the weather conditions and customer feedback and attendance ,” according to the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company .

“ Everybody that I ’ ve talked to today so far reported catching limits of trout ,” said Tammi at the front gate .

Shore anglers continue to use PowerBait and nightcrawlers , while trollers are employing nightcrawlers , spoons and spinners behind dodgers and flashers . Now that the surface water temperature has warmed up , bank anglers are experiencing the top fishing while casting their baits in the deeper water off Blue Heron Point and other areas .

For smallmouth bass , anglers should fish plastic worms and Senkos on 4 lb . test line in the main body .

Kokanee salmon fishing remains tough , although boaters are spotting the fish on their fish finders from 40-70 feet deep . Use hoochies , spinners and spoons , tipped with white corn , near the dam and in the Mokelumne River arm .

In other Pardee news , the swimming pool is now open .

Pardee is holding 198,347 acre feet of water , 97 percent of capacity and 106 percent of average .

Last Gasp for Fly Fishermen

RENO - There have been some decent reports coming from late season fly fishing die-hards working Pelican Beach and the rocks on the south side of the boat ramp .

It doesn ’ t appear that many big cutthroats are being caught , but scores of up to 40 fish per day are filtering in . However , the bite is not great overall sans the occasional good report from lucky or persistent anglers . Interest has really been waning as more and more local lakes and rivers begin fishing well .

Boaters can find trout scattered all over the lake at this time . The fish can be almost anywhere in the water column as well . The lake ’ s water temperatures still haven ’ t warmed up enough to really push the trout from the shallows or down into the briny offshore depths . That being said , it ’ s prudent to cover the water . It ’ s not a bad idea to have one rod bumping the bottom and one rod with a couple ounce banana sinker about 200 feet behind the boat . The top rod may only be down 15 ’ feet , and the bottom rod may be down 50 or more . There ’ s no telling which one may get bit the most .

Logistics , weather and river flows have delayed the project in the past , but if all goes well construction should begin on June 11 and the ramp is projected to be finished 120 or less from the starting date .

With scattered fish , it ’ s a good idea to troll quickly with Lyman ’ s and Apex ’ s . Once a group of fish is found , circle the area and work them until you ’ ve caught them all or they quit biting .

The Truckee River is high enough to be unfishable at 881 cfs , but the water color is right , and NDOW is stocking trout . The water is definitely moving swiftly , so caution is of utmost importance .

The downtown area from approximately West McCarran to Wells Avenue is a good area to look for recent NDOW stockers . These fish can easily be fooled with night crawlers or a spinner such as a Panther Martin or Rooster Tail .

Horseshoe Delivers Scrappy Trout , Big Catfish

FREMONT – The kiosk hasn ’ t received too many reports of fish being caught at Horseshoe Lake , but park rangers have seen more being caught than are being reported to the kiosk .

“ One of our regulars and avid anglers , Joaquin Gutierrez , had a several great days of catches at Quarry Lakes ,” said Joe Sullivan of the East Bay Regional Park District . “ On his first day he caught his limits of trout using spoons and jigs , then he came back the next day and got limits again , using Mice Tails and spoons .
