The Shad Have Arrived!

GUERNEVILLE – Currently the Russian River is in“ excellent shape” for chasing American shad, with flows continuing to hover around 400 cfs with clear conditions, according to King’ s Sport and Tackle:

“ Shad fishing has been fair to good. I was able to get out a couple of evenings this past week and managed 3-6 each night fishing for an hour and a half as well as missing some strikes and dropping a few on the way in. Swing flies with a type II or type III shooting head has been the ticket with chartreuse and green flash flies or small chartreuse grubs with a red jig head for the gear fisherman.

“ Most of the action has been at Johnsons Beach in Guerneville, but I’ m sure you can find them elsewhere like Monte Rio Beach, Memorial Beach in Healdsburg or any deep pool below a shallow riffle.

“ Other species of interest are smallmouth bass with that action being hit and miss. Streamer flies in greens and black work well with a sinking fly line or diving lures, spinners or soft plastics for the spin fisherman. Summer is upon us so expect heavy river traffic on the weekends and soon to be weekdays with swimmers, kayakers and tubers.”

Shad Madness Hits Metro Region

SACRAMENTO – Shad fishing is“ off the hook” for shore anglers and boaters fishing in the Sacramento Area, revealed Uncle Larry Barnes of Sacramento Pro Tackle.

‘’ The best area is from the Yolo County boat ramp to Discovery Park and Sand Cove, although good fishing can be found from Freeport to Verona,” said Barnes.“ Most guys are using ball head jigs with small grub tails in chartreuse or pink. One angler reported catching a 7 lb. shad, while other anglers have landed fish in the 4 lb. range.”

“ Most of the stripers being hooked now in the metropolitan area are shakers or small keepers,” said Barnes.“ I’ ve heard of a few bigger fish from the Elkhorn ramp to Verona, but there is no concentration of them. One angler caught a striper over 20 pounds while tossing out a lure at Elkhorn.”

Alan Fong at Fisherman’ s Warehouse in Sacramento said both black bass and striped bass are hitting on the Mokelumne River in the Delta.

“ On my latest trip to the Mokelumne, my fishing buddy Dave and I caught five stripers while using spoons and a lot of largemouth bass while using spinnerbaits. The top five fish weighed 24 pounds, including two fish weighing 8 and 6 pounds. There are good numbers of fish in the 7 to 10 pound range showing now On a previous trip, I ended up with my best ever five fish limit of bass weighing a total of 46 pounds.”

Calero and Coyote Crappie Action Takes Off

COYOTE- Crappie fishing has taken off across the region, while bass anglers work baits slow and methodically for post-spawn fish.

Crappie fishing was noted as good allaround despite the ban on live minnows, according to Denise Bradford at Coyote Bait and Tackle.

Calero. Guys are going out looking for the schools and dropping down jigs to them and catch one after another,” she noted.

“ Coyote has also been good. The fish are up shallow but adjust your slip bobber to find out where they are sitting,” Bradford said.

“ For bass, Calero has been on a jig bite. It seems most of the fish there are post spawn so they are working for them. But, there have been some nice fish caught,” she noted.

“ Anderson is only open to shoreline fishing. The back end of lake or the front end of the lake are good by the dam. You’ ll have to take a hike, but you can catch lots of fish. Try a drop shot, a Ned rig, or small Keitech swimbaits.” For catfish, Bradford
