Trollers Hook Trout, Casters Nail Smallmouth Bass

CHESTER- Lake Almanor is hitting its spring stride, with both trout and bass blitzing baits and lures.
Captain Bryan Roccucci has been landing quality rainbows and the occasional brown trout up to and beyond the 5 pound mark, while trolling with spoons and at times soft plastics.
As the hex fly hatches get more prolific as we head into the month

of June, trollers are going to have to slow down, put the spoons away and troll with small pieces of threaded night crawler. This presentation will fool trout feeding on large nymphs making the swim to the surface from the bottom in 20 to 40 feet of water.
Bank anglers are hooking trout while fishing the coves near Canyon Dam. The most effective offering has been a worm either fished under a small float or laying right on the bottom with a very light weight. Crickets work too.
Almanor’ s smallmouth are right in the middle of the spawn and you can hook fish to 4 pounds.

Soft plastics offer the most consistent action, but reaction baits are working early and late in the day.

Trout Move Into Deeper Water
IONE – The Lake Amador Resort made their last trout plant of the spring, 1200 pounds of rainbows, into the lake on May 17, but anglers are still hooking good numbers of trout while fishing deeper water. They plan to begin planting again by mid-October with Donaldsonstrain trout and cuttbows raised at their on-site hatchery.
“ I’ m still hearing reports of heavy stringers coming from the 15-20 depth, but with more sunny weather on the way, I am sure they will go deeper soon,” reported Elise Lockhart at the Lake Amador Resort.“ Don’ t forget we allow 24 hour fishing here, so beat the heat and fish at night off the big blue dock below the Clubhouse. Historically, May and all of June make for great night fishing off that dock.”
Big fish honors go to Ed Krische from Folsom, who caught a nice 6.48 pounder from the corner of dam with PowerBait. Lisa Dicesare also landed a lightning trout weighing 4.38 pounds and a rainbow weighing 3.84 pounds at the same spot.

Bass fishing is really good for anglers using an array of lures off the rocky points, now that the spawn is over. Boaters are catching and releasing bass from 3 to 7 pounds.
Lot of crappie and bluegill are showing around structure in the shallows. Fish redworms and crappie jigs for the scrappy panfish.
The lake is only 3 feet from full. Amador is receiving water from Pardee, so that will help keep the water level steady.
AMERICAN RIVER
Shad Bite Turns On!
SACRAMENTO- Shad fishing is excellent on the American River from Discovery Park to Sailor Bar, with both bank anglers and boaters getting into good numbers of fish.
“ My brother, Don, hooked and released around 30 shad on his latest evening trip on the American at Sunrise,” said Alan Fong of Fisherman’ s Warehouse.“ He said his buddy was doing well on the shad while using a pink grub under a bobber.”
