Pyramid Lake
Trout Season Closed Until Oct. 1
RENO- Trout season ended on June 30th at Pyramid Lake. There was a surprising amount of fanfare on the last day of the season. Boaters could be found throughout the lake, and a respectable amount of shore anglers could be found at the deep drop-off beaches like Spider Point. On the not so good side, the bite wasn’ t great to finish the season.
This writer burned a bunch of boat gas and bee lined straight to the deep rocky structure of Hell’ s Kitchen. Expecting to light it up, I was surprised to see a blank screen on my Lowrance HD. There were no big schools of chubs. Where there’ s no food, there’ s no trout.
After an hour of poking around, I had one fish to show for my efforts. I reluctantly headed back to the west shore and a spring that has produced in the past. Once again, I found a lackluster bite and no obvious concentrations of trout. I did manage to vertical jig a nice 5 pound cutthroat, but overall, the bite was quite slow. Then I headed north towards Warrior’ s Point and Nine Mile Bay. This area has definitely offered the most consistent fishing since about the month of May. My friend, Lou, trolled beside me in his boat. We found a fair bite on trout up to about 6 pounds and 26”.
Lou focused on trolling Lyman’ s near the bottom, while I video game fished with vertical jigs. The“ video game” technique is to motor around and study the fish finder. When a few trout are directly beneath the boat, stop and drop a jig on them. Many of the fish I hooked bit before the jig made it to the bottom. If they didn’ t eat on the initial drop, they typically bit
within 4 or 5 pumps.
Overall, the other anglers encountered reported very similar results. The reports were underwhelming with most anglers landing only a handful of trout for their efforts. The action for shore anglers was basically non-existent.

Channel Cat Action Shifts Into High Gear
FREMONT- Fishing has been picking up a little, especially since the catfish plants began at Horseshoe Lake this summer. Boaters are still bagging rainbow trout also, according to Edward Culver of the East Bay Regional Park District.

The park district stocked 750 pounds of cats in Horseshoe the week of July 9 – preceded by 500 pounds of cats the week of June 25.
Jack Antrim of Hayward caught and released a five-pound catfish while trolling a Rainbow Runner on the backside of Horseshoe Lake. He also caught and released two trout on the same lure in the front of Horseshoe Lake that day.
On his next adventure, Jack landed and released three trout in an hour, again while trolling a Rainbow Runner in the front of Horseshoe.
Over a two-day period, Wes Anderson of Fremont caught four catfish while soaking anchovies in the Kiosk Cove.

Bernie Helwig of Milpitas nailed three trout from his boat using garlic PowerBait – and two more rainbows from his boat on his next trip. Dexter Miguel of Union City caught a fivepound, 12-ounce rainbow trout while trolling a Cordell lure from his kayak by the old boat ramp.
Note that the use of lead fishing tackle is prohibited at Quarry Lakes. You can exchange lead tackle at the kiosk in a“ 1 for 1” trade for stainless steel weights.

Big‘ Bows Grab Plugs And Flies
REDDING- Trout fishing on the Sacramento River is red hot between Redding and Red Bluff. The average trout runs about 15 inches and fish over 4 pounds have been common over the past two weeks.
“ The fishing has been outstanding,” reported Captain Mike Bogue of Mike Bogue’ s Guide Service.“ The flows have dipped down to 9,000 cfs, but that hasn’ t slowed the fishing.
“ I always have bait aboard the boat, but I haven’ t used much of it recently because the plug bite has been so good. We are getting both numbers of fish and big fish on Yakima Bait Mag Lip 2.5 plugs. The size and action of these plugs seems to be just about perfect for the trout right now and the rainbows are really slamming them. I’ ve been running a lot of silver patterns and they continue to work great,” Bogue continue.
We are really getting excited about the salmon season up here. The fishing in the ocean has been really good, so I’ m thinking the river fishing is going to be pretty exciting this year.
