New Melones Lake
Kokanee Bite Gets Going
ANGELS CAMP – The kokanee bite has finally turned on at New Melones Reservoir , reported Gary Burns of Take it to the Limit Guide Service .
“ Over the last few weeks , we have put over 50 kokanee in the boat up to 2 lbs ., said Burns . “ Most of the kokanee are ranging from 11 ” to 14 ” and are fat and healthy . On one trip , we put two limits of kokes in the boat .”
He is finding the kokanee the main lake south of the dam to the spillway from 37 ’ down to 50 ’, but said they will be going deeper as the water warms . Pink Wedding Rings in pink and J Pexes in chrome and gold were the top lures . A 2 lb . 1.5 oz . 19 ” kokanee topped the recent catches .
“ Trollers are doing well on trout also ,” said Gene Hildebrand of Glory Hole Sport . “ The top baits have been Wedding Rings , Kastmasters and Needlefish . Angels Creek arm , main lake , and spillway are where you ’ ll find the trout .”
Catfish are coming out at night . “ Drop a line with some cut bait , hang a bell on the end of your pole and go fish . Tuttletown coves and by the dam have been good places to fish cats ,” he advised .
Pretty much anywhere there is shelter , shaded coves , structure , submerged trees , you ’ ll find crappie . Ellery Stevenson of Fresno got on the lake early up Angels Creek Arm and landed a limit by 6:30 am while using crappie jigs in pearl and white .
“ The bass bite on New Melones continues to be productive ,” said John Liechty of Xperience Fishing Guide Service . “ Trip after trip we are landing plenty of healthy largemouth and

spotted bass with a few bigger fish thrown in the mix . The pattern seems to be changing from week to week and many of the bass can be found roaming the open water in search of schools of baitfish .”
“ With the dropping lake level , they are also beginning to show up near deep water . For the next few months the air temperature will be hot and the fish will feed heavily in the mornings , evenings and at night and hunkered down midday to avoid the heat . Shad , bluegill and baby bass patterns continue to be the colors of choice . A variety of reaction baits such as ; crankbaits , ripbaits and spinnerbaits can be used to trigger strikes when the fish seem aggressive ,” he tipped .
New Melones Lake level has dropped 2 ft . since June , currently at 1043.69 ft . and 44.31 ft . from full
