The river season will get started on July 16. If you want to fish during the opening week of the season, give me a call as spots are starting to fill,” Bogue related.
Fly guys working the Sacramento are doing well. There are a lot of bugs coming off. The best offerings over the past week have been stone fly and caddis nymph imitations. Most guys are running 2 or 3 flies on their leaders with the stone fly nymph rigged to drift nearest the bottom.

Fishing Pressure Is Light
RIO VISTA- Fishing pressure remains light due to high winds and rough waters, though some continue to land striped bass locally.
Most anglers took to other parts of the Delta in search of largemouth bass, catfish and panfish, according to Alan Fong, manager at Fisherman’ s Warehouse in Sacramento.
“ You’ ll never escape the wind down there. Maybe one day out of two weeks you’ ll get one decent morning but its never the whole day. By afternoon, you might die,” Fong joked.
“ Some guys are out drifting live bait on the San Joaquin and getting a couple schoolies. The shoals around the mouth of Three Mile are a good place to try,” he tipped.
Otherwise, Fong recommended trying for bass in the smaller bodies of water around the Delta.“ Flipping and punching, frogs and spinnerbaits are all working good for bass if you can find grass or tules,” said Fong.

S ome people think that the summertime is not the best time to catch bass – much less big bass. The hotter and higher the sun gets, the better sitting in front of the air conditioner begins to sound. It’ s during this time of year that too many anglers opt for sipping iced tea instead of fishing.
I fish for a living, so retreating to the climate-controlled house when it gets hot simply is not an option. I have to be able to catch bass in the wind, rain, sleet, snow and the heat. In fact, I really like to catch big fish during the summer. When it’ s hot and sunny, bass – like a lot of anglers – like to get in under the edge of a shade line and will feed looking out. The fish will suspend under cover, so what I like to do is get up close and pitch right down the edges, letting the bait free fall.
In the heat, I will target both structure and vegetation. In these environments, I like to pitch a Berkley 4-inch Power Flippin’ Tube or a Berkley Gripper Football Head Jig. In heavy wood, I might go with a 10-inch Berkley Power Worm with a big half-ounce sinker. The big weight is critical at this time to help sink the bait pretty fast, which can go a

Bass Go On Popper Attack!
COLFAX-Rollins and Scotts Flat Lakes are best known for the trout fishing they provide, but with warm weather and rising water temperatures bass and catfish are stretching lines.
“ The topwater bass fishing at Rollins has been very good while trout fishing has been pretty inconsistent,” exclaimed Jason Pleece of Meadow Vista.“ I’ ve been using a clear Rebel Pop R a lot of the time. Early in the afternoon you can get bass holding in shade near wood and other cover to come up and hit if you work the bait slowly. The closer to dark it gets in the evening the faster you can work.”
“ Most of the bass are smallmouths and spots in the 10 to 16 inch range. I’ ve been average 8 to 10 bass per evening while fishing from my kayak. I did pick up one largemouth this week that weighed a little over a pound,” added Pleece.
At Scotts Flat, fishermen are landing a mix of smallmouth and largemouths bass on topwater lures and soft plastics. For bait soakers, catfish have been on a pretty good bite.
For catfish, anglers are fishing in the campground and along the dam. Liver and worms are the top baits, but mackerel or even hotdog chunks will work. The best time for catfish is in the evening hours and after dark.
If you are looking for tackle or fishing information for a trip to Rollins, Scotts, Halsey Forebay or surrounding waters, Will Fish Tackle in Auburn has what you need. Will Fish Tackle is located at 11944 Masters Court in Auburn, Ca-( 530) 887-0839.

long way towards making a sometimes sluggish summer bass excited enough to strike. If the bites slow down, try downsizing your bullet weight and do some“ finesse flipping” from close range. By flipping smaller weights, you minimize the amount of splash upon your bait’ s entry and are less likely to spook the fish. By pitching in front of your boat and staying quiet, you can target bass that are hiding in grass that other anglers couldn’ t catch or don’ t realize they are there.
When targeting summer bass with these presentations, make sure to keep an eye on your line. When you pitch a big worm and a sinker into heavy cover, you have to watch the line, because when it stops, you want to immediately lift up on it and see if there’ s tension or weight. I almost always use Berkley Trilene 100 % Fluorocarbon for most of my summer presentations

( except topwater lures) because of its manageability, strength and it has little or no stretch so you can strong-arm that big bass out of its shady hangout more easily.
There’ s no sure-fire way to catch big bass once summer rolls around. Different presentations work in different places at different times, regardless of season. But being on the water is the first step towards a successful and memorable summer fishing trip. So, if you’ re out there, find the cover and
