Catfish are hitting early in the morning, late in the afternoons and at night in the Sacramento Deepwater Channel. Gary Long landed four catfish ranging from 2 to 4 pounds while using sardines in the deepwater channel. “Our customers are concentrating on catfish in the local ponds and ditches such as the East Main Levee Ditch,” said Uncle Larry Barnes at Sacramento Pro Tackle. “Some locals are also reporting catching catfish up to 12 pounds in the deep holes of Steelhead Creek near Discovery Park. Anglers are doing best on anchovies and nightcrawlers.” Other fishermen are heading to White Slough in the North Delta to hook catfish on the same baits. Bass fishing is also going great on the Delta, as Alan Fong of Fisherman’s Warehouse in Sacramento reveals. “The frog fishing has been really good,” said Fong. “My last trip to the Mokelumne River yielded a 22 lb. limit. My fishing partner, Mason, and I caught fish ranging from 2 to over 7 pounds, with the average fish going 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 pounds. EL SOBRANTE – Crappie are starting to bite at San Pablo Reservoir. “You will find the smaller ones from the shoreline. For the big ones, try Scow Canyon around the reeds and various cover,” disclosed Marcella Shoemaker of the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company. Joe Clements, a Rocky Mountain employee, caught 20 crappie fishing in Scow Canyon. On the same day, Aaron Baba, another Rocky Mountain employee caught about 20 crappie in the same area, according to Shoemaker. Big fish honors go to Joshua of Las Vegas, who caught a 13.5 lb. catfish down by the dam on June 30. “For the catfish, use anchovies, sardines, mackerel, chicken livers,” advised Shoemaker. “The boat launch has provide the best bite so far.” The lake management didn’t stock any fish over the past week. The lake level is 308.9 feet in elevation and the surface temperature is 71.3 degrees.
