Resnicks, Corporate Agribusiness Fund Jerry Meral’ s Prop. 3 Water Bond Campaign
Many of the same agribusiness interests, including Stewart and Lynda Resnick of the Wonderful Company, that backed the water bond of 2014 and are promoting the Delta Tunnels are now funding the campaign to pass Jerry Meral’ s water bond, Prop. 3, on the November ballot in California.
Wonderful Orchards LLC has donated $ 50,000.00 so far to the campaign. The billionaire Resnicks, who are known as the Koch Brothers of California, contribute many hundreds of thousands of dollars to candidates from the both sides of the political aisle and to proposition campaigns so they can continue selling back public water to the public at a huge profit while promoting legislation and other efforts to eviscerate laws protecting fish, wildlife and water.
The Resnicks are among the biggest contributors to the University of California system— and Stewart Resnick served as
an advisor to Linda Kathehi, the disgraced“ pepper spray chancellor” at UC Davis. For a complete rundown on the Resnicks manipulation of California water politics and their long war on the public trust, go to: www. dailykos. com /...
Meral, now with the Natural Heritage Institute, is one of the leading advocates for the destruction of the Delta ecosystem and West Coast fisheries through the construction of the Delta Tunnels. He infamously said as Governor Brown’ s point man for the Delta Tunnels in 2013,“ The Delta cannot be saved.”
No matter what proponents might claim, this bond is designed to support subsidized corporate agribusiness in the San Joaquin Valley, as evidenced by the contributors to the bond campaign and the provisions of the bond, including $ 1.1 billion to fix Kern County canals.
As then Senate pro Tempore John Burton said so well in a letter to the Planning and Conservation League on September 23, 2002:“ Jerry

Meral has a history of making money for himself and PCL by crafting Bond Initiatives that get special interests to support the initiative campaign in exchange for having their projects funded by the bonds.”
Nothing has changed in regard to Meral’ s strategy over the past 16 years. The watershed restoration and fish and wildlife projects are thrown in there in an effort to fool organizations to sign onto the bond when the real purpose of the bond is to get the taxpayers to pay for projects that benefit

In case anybody has any doubts about who is pushing Proposition 3, here is the list of agribusiness donors to the Yes on Prop. campaign to date. The list of contributors reads like a who’ s who of the state’ s largest and wealthiest corporate agribusiness groups. California Fresh Fruit Association
$ 105,000.00
Agricultural and Dairy Community for Safe Drinking Water and A Reliable Water Supply $ 100,000.00
California Rice Industry Association $ 100,000.00
Northern California Water Association
$ 100,000.00 Western Growers $ 75,000.00 California Dairies, California Activities
$ 75,000.00 Grimmway Enterprises Incorporated
$ 61,415.00 American Pistachio Growers $ 60,000.00 Maxco Supply, Inc. $ 50,000.00 Wonderful Orchard Orchards LLC
$ 50,000.00 Kern Machinery Mutual $ 25,000.00 California Citrus Mutual $ 25,000.00 Milk Producers Council $ 20,000.00 Delano Farms Company $ 18,650.00 The two single largest contributors to the Yes on Prop. 3 campaign are the California Waterfowl Association, with $ 275,000 and Ducks Unlimited, with $ 250,000. The California Wildlife Foundation has contributed $ 50,000, while the California Building Issues Committee has contributed $ 25,000.
The Association of California Water Agencies( ACWA), a big supporter of the Delta Tunnels, argues that Proposition 3 would“ make available $ 8.9 billion in general obligation bonds to fund projects for water supply and quality, watershed restoration, fish and wildlife protection, sustainable groundwater management and repair of existing dams and canals.”
“ Proposition 3 funds would augment $ 1.6 billion for water-related projects already approved by the voters on June 5 with the passage of Proposition 68,” according to ACWA.“ ACWA’ s Board of Directors unanimously voted in November of 2017 to support both propositions and views them as complementary to each other.”
The Sierra Club is opposing Prop. 3, noting that“ this bond underwent a process that gives too much away to rich corporate interests and opens the way for large sums to be spent on ambiguous or environmentally harmful projects. A better approach would be to consider a more tailored bond that addresses real public needs and benefits in an open negotiation

“ The bond will fund investments in water and habitat projects throughout California,” according to the Club.“ Many of these projects are worthwhile. For instance, $ 500 million will be directed toward projects that improve drinking water in disadvantaged communities.”
“ However, other projects are generous giveaways to private entities. Approximately $ 750 million will be given away to an entity to use to support large projects designed to give one of the largest agricultural companies in the world new canals. Other money could go to building new dams even though existing dams are not being maintained at safe levels,” the group said.
There are at least five specific ways that the Club believes this bond will directly harm the environment.
• It could open new funding pathways for ill-conceived dams.
• It could create incentives that harm threatened and endangered species.
• It shifts money away from important upland habitat conservation.
• It raids the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund( GGRF) to build political support.
• Debt servicing for the bond could require future cuts for environmental protection.
The California Democratic Party( CADEM) adopted a position of neutrality on Proposition 3 during the Executive Board meeting on July 15, due to the hard work of 12 Sierra Club volunteers led by delegates R. L. Miller, chair of the California Democratic Party Environmental Caucus, and Stacy Fortner, Assembly District 38 Regional Vice Chair.
“ Water is one of most precious natural resources and should be protected against Big Ag and special interest groups. I am proud of our efforts over the weekend to stop the party from codifying a terrible proposition,” said Stacy Fortner.
Barbara Barrigan-Parrilla, Executive Director of Restore the Delta, said she was thrilled the Party didn’ t endorse Pop. 3,“ the huge Water Bond that contains $ 1.1 billion to fix Kern County canals that are sinking because these same greedy farmers( Resnick and Friends) over pumped their own groundwater. They want you and me to pay for their repairs— which under the law they are supposed to pay for— because they want to spend their money on the Delta Tunnels.”
““ We know there is money in this bond for the San Joaquin Valley environmental justice community. We would like to see a water bond that supports them and Northern California tribal environmental justice communities, and Delta environmental justice communities, and our friends from environmental justice communities in Southern California who are drinking expensive brown water. We the people need to support our collective water needs, or we will suffer separately. No more taxpayer water giveaways to billionaires. Let’ s invest in our local water communities!” Barrigan-Parrilla-Parrilla concluded.
