Tuna Snap Off Cabo
“ or anglers in search of Fyellowfin tuna, Pisces 31’
Cabolero delivered. Sixteen yellowfin were caught in total by the Ladwig family on cedar plugs, petrolero lures and caballito bait out of San Jaime Banks. The tuna were of good size, ranging from about 20 to 25 lbs each,” reported Captain Trace Ehrenberg of the Pisces Fleet.
“ Pisces 38’ C Rod also did well this week, with 16 yellowfin caught by anglers from Michigan. The fish ranged from about 10 to 20 lbs each and hit on feather and cedar plug lures at about 30 miles South of the Old Lighthouse. Later in the week, C Rod caught each of our top species, with 2 striped marlin released of about 120 and 140 lbs each( which hit on caballito live bait), 1 small dorado of about 10 lbs and 1 yellowfin tuna of about 6 lbs. The marlin were found out of Cabo
Real area, the dorado was closer to Palmilla and the yellowfin was found out from the Old Lighthouse. That’ s some hard work being put in by the crew, searching high and low to tick all the boxes for anglers,” exclaimed Ehrenberg.
“ One of our top yellowfin tuna boats this week was the Pisces 32’ Bill Collector. Decent size fish were caught on July 2nd, by anglers the Ramirez family from Palos Verdes, CA, who caught 15 yellowfin total. The tuna ranged in size from 20 to 40 lbs each and hit on cedar plug and feather lures out 37 miles at he 180 Spot. Noteworthy again, later on in the week, Bill Collector caught 20 yellowfin tuna this time, a bit smaller, with fish ranging from 10 to 15 lbs each. The fish hit on cedar plugs and feather lures a bit closer this time, at about 18 miles out, at the 180 Spot,” Ehrenberg disclosed.

Metered Lines, Part 3
By now you should have had your interests pricked regarding metered( or marked) lines. They just aren’ t for trolling anymore, and lends itself to all sorts of precision fishing techniques.
Bait fishing from shore is a natural. Especially if you have the dreaded two rod stamp, the most efficient way to employ the metered line is to make one far cast and one half that length.
It’ s easy to tell what that is with metered lines, a by guess and by golly with monochrome lines.
With one line waaaaay out there, cast the second rod half that distance, then every few minutes take a wind or two with both rods. When you get fish on either rod, you will know how far away the bait was when you hooked up. It is then easy to make the next casts the right distance away to intercept that batch of fish, since most fish don’ t swim solo.
Jigging is also a technique that benefits from having a marked line. So many times I hear the Captain on a rockfish boat call out,“ They’ re from 50 to 80 feet down!”( or something similar) and without the metered line, once again it is only a guess how much line you have out.
Why is this important? Over the years
SALTY TIPS by Steve“ Hippo” Lau
I have found that quite often, if the meter marks are for fish 50- 80 feet down, the smaller fish are at 50 feet and the larger fish are at 80. This behooves you to have at least 90 feet of line out so that when you are making the retrieve, your lure is coming up through the school from below the school. Just this little trick can make pounds of difference in your sack.
Casting lures from shore can also benefit from knowing how much line you have out. Let’ s say you make a cast and catch a fish 50 feet out after making a 100 foot cast. On your next cast, all you have to do is make a 60 foot cast( the extra 10 feet is to give your lure a chance to start swimming correctly) and now you can be super vigilant for a bite when you get to the 50 foot mark.
Not having to cast that extra 40 feet like you did in the original cast can save you lots of time and effort that may result in a few more fish for the trip.
I hope these suggestions will spark your imagination as to how to better utilize metered lines in your everyday fishing. It is a readily available tool that can help you get more from every fishing adventure.
