FOLSOM LAKE
Trollers Bag Rainbow Trout
SACRAMENTO – Boaters are still picking up rainbow trout while trolling deep with downriggers at Folsom Lake.“ The trout are holding at around 50 to 55 feet deep,” reported Alan Fong of Fisherman’ s Warehouse.“ Trollers are doing best while fast-trolling with Speedy Shiners.”
Although most of the trout are in the 12 to 18 inch range, a customer recently showed Fong a photo of a 14 lb. rainbow that he reported landing a Folsom Lake on a trolling adventure.
Landlocked king salmon are also possible in the catches. You will generally find the salmon holding in deeper water below the rainbows. You can hook them while trolling Speedy Shiners or rolling threadfin shad.
Fishermen are also experiencing a good top water bass bite in the main body and forks early and late in the day, according to Fong. A mixture of spotted, smallmouth and largemouth bass are on tap for anglers. During the day, switch over to drop shotting with plastics in deep water off rock and wood structure.
This is the time to start targeting channel catfish along the shoreline. Throw out mackerel, chicken liver and other baits in the evenings for the best success.
Folsom Lake is holding 511,115 acre feet of water, 52 percent of capacity and 82 percent of average. The lake is 417.92 feet in elevation.

Klamath River, providing improving fishing from below Blue Creek to the mouth.
“ The salmon are starting to hold in the holes of the lower 15 miles of river, so we’ re not just catching them in the estuary now,” said Jerry Lampkin of TNG Motor Sports Guide Service.“ We’ re hooking the fish while boondoggling with salmon roe and while throwing and jigging with Kastmasters.”
The fish average 10 to 17 pounds each. Lampkin has been averaging about one fish per trip. The fish are fresh, silvery and bright.
Although Lampkin isn’ t targeting steelhead, he said some anglers are bagging some quality steelhead while fishing on the riffles.“ Bill Wagner reported catching two steelhead in the 8 to 9 lb. range on recent trips,” said Lampkin.
The season for fall-run Chinook salmon began on Aug. 15 and will continue through Dec. 31. The possession limit is six salmon, no more than three over 22 inches.

COLUSA / KNIGHTS LANDING
Catfish Roam the River at Night
RIO LINDA – Channel catfish will remain the most consistent species to target on the Sacramento River until the salmon fishing becomes more reliable.
“ Catfish action is still really good on the river from

Verona to First Beach at Knights Landing,” advised Tim Boggs of Elkhorn Outdoors.“ Fishermen are hooking the catfish at night while using mackerel, chicken liver and G & G Dip Bait.”
Big fish honors go to Eddie Bisbee, who landed a 13 lb. channel catfish while soaking mackerel from shore at Knights Landing. Several days later, he also bagged a 5 lb. catfish, this time while using G & S Dip Bait. The catfish average around 1-3 / 4 to 2-1 / 2 pounds.”
“ Salmon fishing has been up and down at Verona,” said Boggs.“ It’ s either really good or really bad, depending on which day you fish. The majority of anglers are fishing plugs or spinners while anchored up.”
Leon Steppe successfully battled a 22- 1 / 2 lb. Chinook while anchor fishing with a K-14 Kwikfish from his boat at Verona.
“ Upriver on the Sacramento, the salmon fishing is also spotty at Grimes, Tisdale and Colusa,” said Boggs.“ Most anglers are fishing with Silvertron spinners for the kings.”- Dan Bacher

from Oak Point in early August. However, anglers are hooking some keeper stripers averaging 20 inches, as well as releasing undersized fish. Anglers are doing best on stripers while fishing with cut anchovies in Cowboy Cove.
Channel catfish action is also productive. One unnamed angler landed an 8.81 pound catfish while using mackerel off the Marina Pier, according to the Los Vaqueros Marina.
Your bet for cats is to throw out anchovies, chicken liver and mackerel in the South Cove and Cowboy Cove. Most of the catfish are quality ones averaging 5 pounds each.
There was a 2,000-pound catfish plant from Tsai Enterprise on August 16, 2018. Another plant was expected at press time. There are still fish remaining in the lake from the 5,000 lb. plant in late May.
For trout, the South Cove continues to be the most active area for anglers and fish. Fishing past the Rock Wall is also popular with a consistent number of fish being caught. From boats, when the winds allow, bait fishing in the back of Cowboy Cove and trolling near its North shore has been popular.
Shore anglers are having the most success using garlic scented PowerBaits, followed by nightcrawlers and some casting of lures
The reservoir is currently holding 153,000 acre feet of water. Filling has stopped for the summer. The water temperature has heated up to 72 degrees.
