nightcrawlers and flies in the West and East Carson rivers.
Trout action at Lower Bear River Reservoir has been slow and fishing pressure has been light. Bank anglers tossing out PowerBait and nightcrawlers have reported catching rainbows near the boat ramp, reported Jim at the Bear River Lake Resort. The lake level has gone down and the boat ramp is out of the water.

CLEAR LAKE
Creature Baits Rule the Bass Scene
CLEARLAKE – A variety of methods are working for producing largemouth bass at Clear Lake, although the top water bite has slowed with the cooler weather.
“ The biggest bass reported to me this week was a 9.8 lb. largemouth, caught by R. C. on a Brush Hog,” said Mae Erceg of Clear Lake Outdoors.
“ Creature baits are working real well at this time,” advised Erceg.“ Drop shot rigs with Robo Worms in molting craw patterns are also working. The top water bite during the day has died, but boaters are hooking some fish on top water baits from 5:00 a. m. to 7:00 a. m.”
Some of the better spots to target bass include Shag Rock and Quercus Point. The most productive depth is 6 to 12 feet.
Not many anglers are targeting crappie. The same goes for catfish, although one fishermen reported landing an 18-1 / 2 lb.

COLLINS LAKE
14 Lb. Channel Cat Leads Angling Parade
OREGON HOUSE – I’ m happy to report that we’ re still enjoying blue skies and beautiful weather up here on the lake. If August was too hot or too busy for your taste, you should try camping and fishing now that it’ s September.
In the daytime expect weather in the 80’ s with the evenings cooling off into the 60’ s, perfect for fishing and a sunset campfire. The lake is only 21 ′ from full and surface temperature is around 75 º F. It’ s shaping up to be a great few months for norcal anglers before the winter rains arrive.
We are already seeing fall trout biting around 30 feet deep which will pick up as the surface temperature continues to drop. Jimmie Trejo was trolling speedy shiners and limited out, and just to prove it wasn’ t a fluke his buddy Jimmy Wynne caught a limit as well. It doesn’ t matter how you spell it, apparently the best strategy for catching trout this time of year is to be named Jimmie( and bring a downrigger).
Catfish haven’ t quit. Just ask Sherinne Wilson of Santa Rosa, who reeled up a 6 pound cat from the south side of the lake using chicken livers. But the biggest fish this week was a monstrous fat cat caught on anchovies by Parnell Wilson from

Vallejo, tipping the scale at 14 pounds. Parnell was fishing right out front of campsite # 476 in Elmer’ s Cove.
When I was a kid we used to sit on that same shore with lines out overnight watching the stars and waiting for catfish. Don’ t everyone crowd Elmer’ s Cove though; catfish can be found in coves and corners all over the lake as well as the shoreline in front of camps # 202 to # 222 and the open area.
Bass continue to prefer live bait although I’ ve heard of plenty of catches on lures this time of year, including rubber worms and diving crankbait. Still the biggest, and the prettiest bass this week were all caught on live crawdads( we don’ t sell crawdads but ask Johnson’ s in Yuba City or Frank’ s Beacon in Oroville, or catch them on the shore).
Dale from Forbestown was dropping‘ dads to catch a 5-1 / 4 pounder. Elaine from Browns Valley used the same to catch, among others, this beautiful spotted bass.
But the prize for the bass with the biggest gut goes to Holly and Brandon who reeled in a 6.5 pound largemouth bass whose boxy profile would fit right into an 80’ s video game.
You’ ll find crappie, bluegill and smaller bass in the shallows for the next two months and with the water being so clear it’ s a lot of fun to see how they behave with different jigs and bait. However, their appetite can be fickle. Keep an eye out anyway, often

LAKE DAVIS
Trout Fishing Picks Up As Water Cools
PORTOLA – Rainbow trout fishing has picked up with the arrival of cooler water temperatures at Lake Davis.
Two anglers, Mike Moyles of Reno and Tony Russo of Sacramento, reported catching four rainbows up to 24 inches on their latest trip to Davis. They landed fish averaging 2 ponds each while trolling with Needlefish in red dot frog at 15 2o 20 feet deep, reported Jeanne Graham of J & J Grizzly Country Store and Campground Resort
“ Bank fishing for trout is also improving for anglers tossing out worms, PowerBait and Pautzke Fire Balls at Mallard Cove, Eagle Point and the Lightning Tree,” she stated.
You can expect the trout fishing bite at Davis to break loose as the water temperature cools more. The CDFW made two plants of rainbow trout totaling 14,200 pounds at Lake Davis in early August, greatly adding to the number of trout found in the lake.
One angler landed a 4-1 / 2 lb. largemouth bass while trolling for trout with a chartreuse Rooster Tail.
“ The catfish action is still really good,” added Graham.“ Anglers are hooking the most fish while throwing out nightcrawlers and dough baits.”
Children are also still catching bluegill by using mealworms, redworms and minicrawlers in the Lightning Tree area.
The surface water temperature has cooled down to 66 degrees in the morning and 68 degrees in the afternoon.
Davis Lake is holding 71,131 acre feet of water, 86 percent of capacity and 118 percent of capacity.
