pounds, with a few bigger fish to 8 pounds.”
“ Boaters are doing best jigging with Blade Runner Chin Spin spinner / jig lures,” said Barnes.“ Once they find the fish, anglers are tossing out Alabama rigs. One of the better spots has been around the fertilizer plant.”
“ Some anglers are probably also trolling Yo-Zuri lures, but I haven’ t heard any reports from trollers lately,” he noted.
The salmon fishing in the Sacramento area below Discovery Park has slowed down, with the top local action taking place below the mouth of the Feather at Verona.“ Anglers are anchor fishing or trolling with Flatfish and Silvertron spinners,” said Barnes.
“ Salmon fishing on the Sacramento river in the metropolitan area is really slow,” confirmed Alan Fong at Fisherman’ s Warehouse.“ The water temperature is still too warm and the fish are moving quickly upriver.”

SAN PABLO RESERVOIR
28 Lb. Channel Cat Dominates Catches
EL SOBRANTE – Channel catfish still offer anglers at San Pablo Reservoir their best chance of going home with fish
Just ask Lindomar Da Silva of San Pablo, who caught a 28 lb. catfish while using chicken liver on September 9. No location of the catch was provided by the angler.
Marcella Shoemaker of the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company recommended fishing anchovies, sardines, mackerel, and chicken liver for the cats. The boat launch remains the top area to target.
Crappie are also worth a try. Anglers are hooking the big ones while using small jigs and swimbaits from a boat in Scow Canyon around tules and cover. For the smaller ones, use the same lures along the shoreline.
Both largemouth and spotted bass are found in San Pablo Reservoir, but Shoemaker hasn’ t received any reports of bass caught lately.
The lake level is 301.6 feet in elevation and the surface temperature is 72 degrees. After the surface temperature cools below 70 degrees, expect trout plants to start.
Stampede Reservoir kicked out these beautiful kokanee during a trip with Marc Christophel this August. The salmon grabbed Mack’ s Lure hoochies and Kok-A-Nuts teamed with Sling Blade Dodgers.

SHADOW CLIFFS / QUARRY LAKES
Float Tubers Catch & Release Largemouths In Arroyo Ponds
PLEASANTON – Fishing activity in the Shadow Cliffs Recreation Area focused on catch and release largemouth bass in the Arroyo Ponds over the past couple of weeks.
Chuck Wilder of Livermore caught and released three bass to 5 pounds while float tubing in the arroyo, reported Joe Sullivan of the East Bay Regional Park District. Juan of Livermore hooked and released two bass in the arroyo. He caught one on a Carolina-rigged swim bait and the other one on a Senko.
The regulations for the Arroyo Ponds require both an EBRPD daily fishing permit and CA state fishing license The fishing is restricted to catch and release, barbless hooks, artificial lures, and float tubes only.

In Shadow Cliffs Reservoir, channel catfish offer the top action. Fish mackerel, chicken livers, anchovies and other cut baits to entice the hard-fighting whiskerfish.
Fishing pressure remains very light at Quarry Lakes.“ Only one person came to the kiosk and reported a catch,” said Sullivan.“ Lionel caught three catfish, the largest weighing 10 lbs. 14 oz. He was fishing Mouse Tails on Horseshoe Lake when the big cat hit.”
SHASTA LAKE
‘ Bow & Bass On Solid Lake Summer Bite
REDDING- We are in the final days of summer and the fishing at Lake Shasta is outstanding for both trout and bass. Roger McDonald, a Fish Sniffer reader from Sacramento, celebrated his retirement by spending 4 days on Lake Shasta with his wife Doris.
“ I’ ve fished Lake Shasta several times during the month of September in the past and the trout fishing is often very good. This year the rainbow trout action was great. We had rainbows that ranged from about 13 inches to 4 pounds. We got all of them on P-Line hoochies trolled behind 6 inch green and chrome UV Sling Blades. The trout were locked in at around 60 feet feeding on bait and they just couldn’ t ignore our hoochies. We scented them with Threadfin Shad formula Pro-Cure,” said McDonald.
There have been some browns around that range up to 6 pounds. These fish will hit large spoons and rigged shad. Look for the browns to be holding deeper than the rainbows.
Bass anglers are mixing things up for spots, smallmouths and the occasional largemouth. Throughout the day drop shot rigs armed with Mother’ s Finest Worms are the hands down best choice. Early and late in the day you can pull bass off clay banks with walking baits, poppers and rip baits.
The average bass being caught right now is a 12 to 13 inch spotted bass, but there are some much larger fish up for grabs for persistent anglers.
As of press time, Lake Shasta was 75 feet from maximum pool and dropping about 6 inches per day.
TAHOE
Kokanee Bite Rages, Mack Action Steady!
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE- The summer to fall transition is always exciting at Lake Tahoe. These days limit style kokanee fishing is underway and if you want to go deep you can get a limit of macks.
The team at Tahoe Sportfishing had an incredible outing on Labor Day, boating 40 kokanee during a 3 hour afternoon trolling trip. When macks are the target Tahoe Sportfishing skippers are putting their clients on limits and near limits of 2 to 4 pound lakers. At times a much larger fish shows up.
Captain Mike Nielsen has been putting his clients on solid mackinaw fishing while trolling and jigging. Most of the macks Mike’ s clients are landing run 3 to 6 pounds, but they have randomly brought up some larger double digit fish too.
Mickey Daniels of Mickey’ s Big Mack Charters has been enjoying solid action at the north end of the lake. Mickey’ s clients have been hooking mackinaw up to 7 pounds. Some fish are being kept for the table while the others are tagged and released. Mickey employs a variety of different lures for his fish including Shasta Tackle Kok-A-Nuts teamed with Sling Blade dodgers.
As the water temperature comes down this fall, topline trolling for macks, browns and rainbows will heat up.

Target Quality Largemouths In Calero, Numbers In Anderson
COYOTE- Fall fishing patterns continue to progress as temperatures cool off and days get shorter with opportunities for bass, catfish and crappie all available.
A plethora of baits were working this week for largemouth bass, according to the pro staff at Coyote Bait and Tackle.
“ Reaction baits are a really good bet right now with the fish starting to come up into the shallows. A square bill, spinnerbait or jerk bait will do good during the mornings or evenings. During the day, you’ ll always do good with finesse. Smallr Keitechs on a darter head and a drop shot on the ledges,” said Alex Tran.
“ Anderson always puts out the smaller fish but you get quantity. You get the quality over in Calero.” He added.
Crappie and catfish were also available for anglers.“ Crappie are coming up shallow at both Calero and Anderson. Try by the boat launch cove at Calero and over by the dam at Anderson. If you’ re looking for catfish, try Uvas or Chesbro,” said Tran.
