8 FRESHWATER Oct 12 - 26, 2018 FRESHWATER REPORTS: CONTINUED FROM PG 4 LAKE BERRYESSA cont. “We didn’t fish the early morning - started about 10:30 am at their request. Not sure how many we caught, but it was a pretty fair afternoon bite. It started with a really nice smallmouth, near 2 1/2 lbs, and then several quality largemouth. No 3 pounders this trip, but all over 2 lbs.” “We had our best action on a point I like around 2 pm. Some bass had actually moved shallow in the afternoon. They were hitting with authority! Couldn’t get a bite there in the late morning!” he said. “I really enjoyed the time with both of them in spite of a slow bite. We are looking forward to the finished product, or show, or something! I hope he has an enlarging app on his camera - LOL! While a few anglers did well on the major weekend tournament, September is really a slow month at Berryessa and Clear Lake (daytime). Night fishing is best,” he stated. Hemphill noted that October will bring the colder and longer nights and the overall bite, day and night, will improve. The water temperature was 72 to 75 degrees. The spoon bite is great for experienced bass enthusiasts at Berryessa now. “Anglers are dropping spoons down at 35 to 55 feet deep to catch lots of spotted, largemouth and smallmouth bass in the 2 to 4 pound range,” said Alan Fong at the Fisherman’s Warehouse. Trout fishing is still very good. Boaters trolling Apex lures and other offerings are nailing Eagle Lake-strain rainbows at 45 to 55 feet deep in the main body. The fish range from 1-1/2 to 5 pounds, according to Fong. BULLARDS BAR/ ENGLEBRIGHT RESERVOIRS Bass Offer Top Sport as Kokanee Season Ends SMARTVILLE - The kokanee salmon bite has died as the fish move up the Yuba River to spawn, but anglers are experiencing solid fishing for spotted bass. Chris Dufour reported productive bass fishing on his recent trip to Bullards Bar with his two daughters. DARE TO COMPARE! VOL.37 • ISS. 22 “Our family visited Bullards Bar Reservoir this weekend,” he said. “As you know, the fishery is world class. In addition to trophy bass, the surroundings are absolutely beautiful! We caught and released bass while drop shotting the points in 50 feet of water with Robo Worms.” Bullards Bar is holding 624,685 feet of water, 65 percent of capacity and 104 percent of average. Englebright is holding 66,359 acre feet of water, 95 percent of capacity and 107 percent of average. - Dan Bacher Stephan Grobecker landed this 11.5 pound largemouth while fishing with Chris Childers of Chris Childers Clearlake Guide Services. LAKE CAMANCHE CLEAR LAKE BURSON- Beau Courtroul of the Lake Camanche Recreation Company said, “Bass fishing remains slow with no consistent pattern as the fish are found deep one day and much shallower the following day.” “I have found the bass in the shallows one day with crankbaits or umbrella rigs, but when the sun comes up, the bite dies. Other days, I find them as deep as 35 feet with Brush Hogs, and on other days, they are in the mid-level anywhere from 8 to 35 feet,” he stated. The recent hot spell as brought back the recreational boaters, but soon, the bass and trout fishing armada will hold center stage on the lake. The Lodi High School Bass Team is holding a high school event at the lake on October 21st with a $25.00 entry fee. Trout plants from the Mt. Lassen Hatchery will start as soon as the overall water temperatures cool. The lake held 83 percent. - Dave Hurley CLEARLAKE – The water temperature is cooling down at Clear Lake – around 70 degrees at press time - and the most effective methods to employ to hook bass have changed, “The top water bite has slowed down, although one angler fishing the Buckingham area reported catching and releasing a 3 lb. 6 oz. largemouth while tossing out a frog,” said Mae Erceg of Clear Lake Outdoors. She recommended using Strike King 1.5 square bill crankbaits and Lucky Craft LV 400 baits, as well as drop shotting with Robo Worms and other plastics, for maximum success. “The bass fishing now is about 7 on a scale of 1 to 10,” said Erceg. “Most of the fish are hitting in to 10 feet of water. The biggest fish I’ve heard caught over the past couple of weeks was a largemouth over 12 pounds landed by Jeremy Taylor, fishing guide.” Fishermen have brought in some hefty catfish from Clear Lake lately. For example, guide Cody Bashore reported hooking and releasing an 18 lb. catfish while targeting bass on the lake’s north Bass Action Gets ‘Tough’ Rating GO AHEAD!
