The crappie action should start heating up as the panfish congregate around bait and structure around the lake with the dropping water temperatures. Use jigs and small swimbaits for the slabsides.

COLLINS LAKE
Large Channel Cats Lead Angling Parade Until Trout Plants Begin
OREGON HOUSE – With the cooling weather, weekly trout plants will return to Collins Lake from Mid-October to Thanksgiving. Every plant will include larger trophy rainbows for both shore anglers and boat fishermen to pursue.
Meanwhile, catfish are dominating the fishing scene at Collins. Anglers are hooking the catfish while soaking crawdads, nightcrawlers, chicken livers and mackerel around the reservoir
Big fish honors go to John Gazaway of Yuba City, who landed an 11-1 / 4 lb. catfish while using a crawdad, reported Lisa at the Collins Lake Resort. Brian Bender of Elk Grove also had a great time reeling in three catfish weighing 10-3 / 4, 9-1 / 2 and 6-1 / 2 pounds while soaking worms from shore.
Two anglers, Cathy and Kelvin from Oroville, teamed up to land a 10-1 / 4 lb. channel cat. They used worms near the marina to entice the big cat.
Other anglers have reporting hooking trout. Sam Smith of Sebastopol landed a 4.5 lb. rainbow while trolling Needlefish at 35 feet near the dam. Lucas Alves demonstrated his angling prowess by catching a two pound trout on a lure.
Finally, Anthony Flores was fishing a nightcrawler when he nailed a 4-1 / 2 lb. bass.
The lake level is 24 feet from full and the surface water temperature is 73 degrees.

DAVIS LAKE
Trout Fishing Picks Up as Water Cools
PORTOLA – The surface water temperature has cooled down to 62 degrees and will cool down more with the arrival of colder nights at Lake Davis, spurring an improved trout bite.
“ The trout fishing is about a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10,” rated Jim Graham of the J & J Grizzly Country Store and Campground Resort.“ Yesterday two anglers kept two rainbows measuring 26 and 22-1 / 2 inches long, as well as releasing several 18 to 19 inch fish, while fishing worms and

PowerBait off Camp Five.”
Trolling is also going strong.“ Several of our campers went out yesterday and limited out in two hours,” said Graham.“ They trolled with red dot frog Needlefish and copper red head Dick Nites in the upper end of the lake. The fish went up to 24 inches and averaging 18 to 19 inches each.”
There are lots of rainbow trout swimming around in Lake Davis. The CDFW made two plants of rainbow trout totaling 14,200 pounds at Lake Davis in early August, greatly adding to the number of trout found in the lake.
The brown bullhead catfish action continues to be good.“ Two locals bagged 20 catfish to 19 inches while fishing worms and PowerBait off Catfish Point,” said Graham.
Trollers have also reported catching several largemouth bass in the 1-1 / 2 to 2 lb. range while trolling gold Panther Martins for trout.
Davis Lake is holding 68,152 acre feet of water, 82 percent of capacity and 117 percent of capacity.

DEL VALLE LAKE
Catfish Munching on Chicken Liver, Anchovies
LIVERMORE – The water temperature at Lake
Del Valle has started to drop, starting off with 68 degrees and getting up to as high as 72 degrees during the day. That means it’ s time for trout plants to begin; the first 1,000 pounds went in the week of October 1.
Until the trout action heats up, striped bass, catfish and black bass will offer the top fishing at the reservoir.
“ The striped bass have been boiling out in in Heron Bay and by the dam, although it is tough to get them to bite on anything that cannot imitate the shad, such as flukes or Rat-L-Traps in shad patterns,” said Jacob of the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company.“ Bait has been a much more reliable option for the striper fishing. Anglers are fishing anchovies off large rocky points or in the channel.”
“ The catfish have also been biting well, with a lot of large cats being caught out by the dam. As the water drops, the structures in the water will become more exposed, making them even more prime spots to fish for the cats. The deep water by the dam has also been producing. Anchovies, chicken liver and mackerel are the best baits, with mackerel my personal favorite,” said Jacob.
“ The smallmouth and largemouth bass have also been hungry, with many decentsize bass caught by anglers fishing in the lower narrows. The reed patches are out of the water for the most part, so fishing the fallen trees in the water or in the coves is a good bet,” he stated.
“ Fishing from a boat is the way to go for the bass; they are quite picky out here, so covering a lot of ground is important if you want to pull out the pigs in the lake,” he

tipped.
Bluegill are hitting jumbo redworms fished in the weed mats or under wooden structure near shore.
The trout fishing is still slow, although will change as the water cools and trout plants boost the catches.

DON PEDRO LAKE
Trollers Bag Quality Rainbows
LA GRANGE- Rainbow trout remain the top species at Don Pedro Lake with the normal offerings of lures such as silver / blue Kastmasters, Needlefish, Apex lures, or Cripplures at depths to 70 feet.
The kokanee are in full spawn mode, and few fishermen are targeting the landlocked salmon.
Bass fishing continues to be slow, but the bait should be schooling up soon as the water temperatures continue to cool.
Boat traffic is down to a minimum despite the recent hot spell. The lake dropped to 75 percent.

EAGLE LAKE
Trout Bite Gets More Intense!
SPAULDING- The rainbow trout action at Eagle Lake has gotten a lot better and is expected to get downright excellent in late October and November.
As of press time, anglers were landing limits of rainbows while trolling Eagle’ s southern basin. The trout are in the top 15 feet of the water column and can be found right on the surface early in the morning. The average trout is going about 2.75 pounds and the largest fish top out at 5.
A wide variety of lures are working at this time. Orange spoons are performing the best overall, but flies, grubs and threaded worms are hooking fish too.
Anglers soaking worms under bobbers are hooking a few fish, but overall trollers are enjoying the best action at this time. As the water temperature continues to decline, the bait and bobber bite and fly bites should ramp up. By late October fly anglers should be enjoying stellar action while wading the shallows.
If you’ d like to take a guided fishing trip at Eagle Lake, Capt. Cliff Spediacci of Hook & Ladder Guide Service is a great choice. For more information or to book a date, give Cliff a call at( 530) 250-5996.
