South Cove on December 3.
Other anglers are doing well while
focusing on rainbow trout. Just ask Matt
Stender and his buddy, who both caught
their limits on trout in Cox Cove, using a
Rapala.
South Cove continues to be the most
active area for anglers and trout. Fishing
past the Rock Wall is also popular with a
consistent number of fish being caught.
Boaters are experiencing the top fishing in
Howden and Cowboy Coves.
Shore anglers continue to experience
the most trout success while using
garlic scented PowerBaits, followed by
nightcrawlers. Lots of limits of trout have
been coming in.
The latest plant of 1000 pounds was
2,000 pounds of Mount Lassen rainbows,
on December 4, according to Steve
Richert of the Los Vaqueros.
The water level is currently at 148,000-
acre feet. With the cooler days and windy
weather, the water temperature is floating
between 60 and 62 degrees depending on
the time of day. The water clarity is good.

ANGELS CAMP - Trout
fishing is tough at New
Melones, with anglers
catching one or two trout if
they are lucky. The positive
news is the fish being
caught are good-sized.
Shore anglers are
fishing with nightcrawlers
and Power Bait by the
Tuttletown Ramp and the
boat ramp by the Glory
Hole Marina. Randy
caught a 4.2 lb. rainbow
while shore fishing by the
Tuttletown Ramp.
Ken and Barbara teamed
up to catch a 6 lb. rainbow
while trolling by the dam
with an Ex-Cel spoon,
according to Glory Hole
Sports. Harold also landed
a 4 lb. 9 oz. rainbow while
trolling with a ExCel spoon
at Horseshoe Bend.
This young man hit Lake Almanor with Captain Bryan Roccucci on November 24 and landed several
rainbows, including this 24 inch monster!

Bass fishing continues to tough for most
anglers. If you want to hook bass, using
finesse baits at 35 to 45 feet deep should
yield the top results. Anglers can also
find some action on quality spotted and
largemouth bass with reaction baits such
as umbrella rigs, glide baits, or rip baits.
New Melones is holding 1,772,017 acre
feet of water, 74 percent of capacity and
130 percent of average. The lake level is
1030.91 feet in elevation.

OROVILLE – Fishing pressure for black
bass, king salmon and other species
remains very light due to the dropping
lake level at Lake Oroville. The good
news is that the rains have arrived and
the Camp Fire has been 100 percent
contained.
Lake Oroville continues to drop. The
water level has gone to 667.72 feet
above sea level. The reservoir

Targetting the lake’s landlocked
Chinooks is probably not a great idea
until the spring when the fish will be of
catchable size. Anglers trying to catch
the large holdover salmon will be getting
hit constantly by the small fish now when
they troll through an area.
The California Department of Fish and
Wildlife stocked 139,000 chinook salmon
from the Feather River Fish Hatchery in
late September 2018 for Lake Oroville’s
popular landlocked salmon program,
according to Penny Crawshaw, hatchery
manager 2. “The fish are about 23 to the
pound, about 6 inches long,” she noted.
Few fishermen have been fishing for the
landlocked steelhead in the Thermalito
Afterbay lately. The Feather River
Fish Hatchery stocked over 231,682
steelhead in a variety of size ranges in the
winter and spring of 2018, according to
Crawshaw.
