The structure along the shoreline has been erased by the big swell, but surf perch action should improve with the arrival of normal-sized swells that will bring in some new nooks and crannies. - Dave Hurley HALF MOON BAY Big Groundswell Impacts Rockfish Bite Before December 31 Closurew EL GRANADA - The big swell was the 29 story of the final two weeks of the boat-based rockfish season out of Pillar Point Harbor, and the swell brought in big wave surfers from around the globe for the anticipated Maverick’s Big Surf Contest that is announced with only a few day’s prior notice. The winds were anticipated to be high, and the tentative contest for Monday, December 17 was postponed, but both male and female surfers were out in the huge waves on Tuesday and Wednesday. Captain Tom Mattusch of the Huli Cat and the boats out of Half Moon Bay Sport Fishing were out with passengers observing the surfers despite the postponement of the actual contest. The window for the contest to be rescheduled will last until March 1st, and the event is a huge boon to the local economy.
