30 January 4-18, 2019 BAJA ROUNDUP VOL.38 • ISS. 2 East Cape Anglers Score Full Menu Of Gamefish “ T he amazing fishing season continues as the cruiser Mahi Mahi is on the fish once again. Tuna, marlin and sailfish all on the hook this afternoon off the East Cape,” reported Eddie Dalmau of Van Wormer Resorts. “On December 6, Lisa MacEntee McElwain headed out from the Hotel Palmas De Cortez and had a fantastic day on the water landing her first ever wahoo and several big dorado. The wahoo fishing has been really good, especially when you consider that we are well into the month of December,” Dalmau exclaimed This angler got the thrill of a lifetime when he landed and released this impressive East Cape sailfish during a December outing. Highs are in the mid 80’s to lows in the mid 50’s to low 60’s. Really perfect weather the last week and pretty normal for this time of year. Lots of sunshine in January is one of the reasons Cabo is so famous, but we will take it and aren’t complaining,” related Captain Jerry Chapman of JC Sportfishing. “Cooler water temperatures probably have had something to do with this week’s hit and miss fishing as it is much cooler compared to last week. Even some areas water was around 74 degrees big difference over a week ago. It shouldn’t affect striped marlin fishing and will definitely draw yellowtail and more sierras to the area,” said Chapman. “Marlin fishing has been pretty off and on all week from the Light House to Rancho Migrino is where fish have been caught and what they are hitting is live bait and lures. All fish are being landed from 1 to 4 miles offshore on the Pacific side. I am not saying we are catching lots of marlin what I am saying is what we have caught was caught in those areas,” Chapman shared. “Dorado action is just ok but steady with some boats averaging like 3 fish per trip. They have been schooled up and normally when you catch a bull you will start to land lots of hens. The hot spots for dorado is up and around Rancho Migrino about a ½ miles off the beach all the way up to Golden Gate using lures, live bait and ballyhoo,” Chapman said. We’ve had pretty decent wahoo fishing with a good friend of mine landing 3 nice wahoo from 25lbs to 40lbs. The fish were landed at Rancho Migrino on jet heads trolling at a higher speed at around 12 to 13 knots.” “If you run to the 1150 area and look for some porpoise you might run into a school of tuna. If you run out about 30 to 40 miles, this seems to be the area for them with reports of large schools in this area. Most of the tuna landed are between 12lb to 20lbs. If you’re lucky you might be the only boat in this area. All reports that I have heard of being blind strikes using Cedar Plugs, King Busters and a little on live bait,” Chapman concluded.
