NEW MELONES LAKE
cont.
as the Department of Water Resources
announced the reopening of the Spillway
Boat Ramp area on Lake Oroville three
days per week.
From now on, the Spillway Boat Ramp
area will be open to the public Friday
through Sunday from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The Boat Ramp area will remain closed
Monday through Thursday as construction
activities continue.
The Spillway Boat Ramp is the largest
boat ramp facility at Lake Oroville with
two stages of multi-lane boat ramps and
a total of 20 launch lanes depending on
lake levels. DWR has repaved the parking
lot and portions of the boat ramp lanes to
increase access. The area also includes
the trailhead to a network of multi-use
trails for hikers, bikers and equestrians.
Landlocked Chinook salmon continue to
provide very good action on Lake Orovile.
On a recent solo trip, Rob Reimers of
Rustic Rob’s Guide Service caught his five
fish limit of salmon averaging 16 inches
long while trolling with Brad’s Kokanee
Cut Plugs at 45 to 55 feet near the dam at
Oroville. The top fish measured 18 inches
long.
The fishing slowed down the next day,
but has rebounded since then.

fish on already, and only had to change
lures one time. The kokanee are starting
to migrate towards structure. We even
caught and released a bass at 50 feet,”
stated Smith.
For bass, John Leichty of Xperience
Fishing Guide Service said, “Not much
has changed as the lake remains
relatively stable. The bass bite is not
on fire, but there are fish to be caught
when you slow way down. A finesse
presentation is the way to go by dragging
a jig or plastics on the shakey head from
35 to 65 feet.”
“If you find a pod of bass off of structure,
you can drop-shot them. I have a night
trip this coming Tuesday, and I hope the
moonlight action will be good as we will be
out all night long in search of some larger
bass. There is the occasional quality bass
taken on a swimbait or a topwater lure,
and you can find fish as shallow as 5 feet
on some casts in certain areas of the
lake,” he concluded.
The lake has dropped from 89 to 87
percent of capacity.
