Bridgeport Reservoir Kicks
Out Trout & Kokanee!
BRIDGEPORT- “This week at Bridgeport
Reservoir we saw quite a few kokanee
caught up in the Buckeye Bay channels
as well as some nice rainbows,” reported
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods in
Bridgeport. “The fishing hasn’t been off
the hook but there are some good fish in
the 2.5 to 4 pound range being caught.
Some of the kokanee are already in
spawning colors, if you catch these fish it’s
best to let them go to finish their business,
they aren’t really any good to eat anyway
once they’ve turned color. Hopefully they’ll
have some success spawning and we’ll
Big kokanee continue to grab lures at New Melones Reservoir. These hefty fish were landed
during a trip with Captain Monte Smith on August 14.

have a new crop of them for next year!
Trolling for perch has still been pretty
good with lots of nice 1 to 2 pounders
being caught with crawlers, small Rapalas
and Needlefish. There has been a little
action still off of Rainbow Point and in the
East Walker channel

also some fish caught on bait like pinched
crawlers and PowerBait. Some of the fly
anglers are having good luck stripping
streamers with sinking lines as well. In
a week or two the weather patterns will
likely start to change and the water temps
will start to drop, when this happens the
fishing should get really good again,” said
Reid.
“The East Walker is still holding at
around 30 cfs, the water temps haven’t
climbed since last week. The fish are still
feeling pretty good. It’s probably best for
the safety of the fish down there to focus
your fishing on the morning hours of the
day when things are a little cooler. The
action on the river hasn’t been red hot but
there are definitely some good fish being
caught. It’s mostly nymphing action right
now, with no streamer or dry success
being reported to us lately. Mainly caddis
nymphs as well as some small midge
patterns have been doing the best,” Reid
concluded.
OROVILLE – The salmon fishing has
improved as more fall run Chinook move
into the Feather River.
On Wednesday, August 28, three
anglers fishing with Rob Reimers of
Rustic Rob’s Guide Service landed three
hard-fighting salmon below the Thermalito
Afterbay Outlet.
“Two of the fish were definitely fall run
fish, since they were bright. The fish
weighed 18, 12 and 8 pounds. Jake
landed two Chinooks, while Larry caught
one. In addition to the fish we landed, we
had one other takedown,” said Reimers.
All of the fish hit Brad’s Killerfish in
dragonfly and gator colors below the
outlet in the flats. “Most of the other
anglers reported catching one or two fish.
I’ve been averaging 1 to 2 fish per trip
lately,” he added.
The weather is finally cooling down and
the fishing is expected to get even better
as increasing numbers of salmon move
into the system.
Few anglers have reported success
on striped bass, catfish or other species
on the Feather over the past couple of
weeks.
