QUARRY LAKES/SHADOW CLIFFS
RESERVOIR cont.
Big fish honors go to Rudy, who caught
a nine-pound catfish while fishing from
the ADA dock near the boat ramp. Henry
also caught a total of four catfish while
fishing from the ADA dock near the boat
ramp.
Fishing for rainbow trout should improve
dramatically by the end of September
when the water temperature cools and
trout plants begin again at both the
Quarry Lakes and Shadow Cliffs Regional
Recreation Area.
RANCHO SECO LAKE
Trout Plants Will Begin In
Late October
HERALD – The surface water
temperature at Rancho Seco Lake is
still too warm to plant rainbow trout, but
plants will resume this fall during the
week of October 28 when 500 pounds
of trophy rainbows will be stocked in
Rancho Seco.
After the week of October 28, 500
pounds of standard size catchable trout
will be planted the week of November 11,
November 25, November 25, December 9
and December 30.
To see the plant schedule, go to: https://
rockymountainrec.com/lake-facilities/
listing/rancho-seco-recreational-area.
A total of 6500 pounds of trout will have
been planted by the end of this year.
Florida-strain largemouth bass, redear
sunfish, crappie and bluegill are now
available for anglers on the lake. Anglers
nail the bass while using Huddleston and
other rainbow trout swimbaits, Senkos,
swimbaits, plastic worms, spinnerbaits
and jigs.
For redear sunfish, crappie and bluegill,
anglers should fish small jigs, redworms
and mealworms around structure and
bad salmon. To book a trip with Weese of

REDDING- The
2019 river salmon
season has been
a strange one so far. The fishing is
productive and big fish up to and beyond
30 pounds are being caught, but hooking
up takes patience. The fish have not
arrived in a big push. Instead the fishing
has been characterized by starts and
stops…great today, slow yesterday and
good the day before that.
Most guides are scoring anywhere from
a fish per rod to limits depending on the
day and there has been a definite uptick in
the action with the arrival of September’s
first full moon.
Nobody is complaining about the size
of the fish. The average salmon goes 12
to 14 pounds and fish up to and beyond
20 have been common. There are few
colored fish mixed in and even those are
in good shape.
The average rank and file king is
chrome bright and clean. Due to the
downriver water temperature, the fish are
shooting right up the system and that’s
why chromers have been the norm from
Corning north.
Some anglers are finding success
fishing out of Woodson Bridge, but most
of the pressure is upriver from Red Bluff.
Plugs are the offering of choice early.
When the sun hit the water back bouncing
with a combination of plugs and roe
leaves no stone unturned.
If you’d like to experience the thrill of
hooking a big Sac River king, both Robert
Weese and Mike Bogue are top sticks

COLFAX- “I did something I’ve been
wanting to try for a long time. I hit Rollins
Lake from my kayak and spent some time
chasing bass with my fly rod,” reported
Jason Pleece of Meadow Vista. “I ended
up hooking quite a few fish and had a
great time.”
“I used a 5-weight rod to toss both
streamers and surface bugs. For a
streamer, I used No. 4 Woolly Buggers
in black and olive colors. I added a tiny
split shot above the fly to get it down a
foot or so. For topwater action I used
both a small deer hair mouse and a foam
rubber legged bluegill style bug,” Pleece
disclosed.
“In all I caught 7 spotted bass and
smallmouths to 2 pounds and 4 bluegill
up to about 5 inches. The Woolly Bugger
and the foam bug got most of the strikes.
I thought I’d be somewhat handicapped
with the fly rod, but in reality, I don’t
think I could have done any better with
a spinning rod at this time of the year,”
Pleece concluded.
At Scotts Flat, anglers continue to catch
bass on topwater baits early and late.
During the daylight hours, plastic worms
and Senkos can pay off provided you fish
slowly.
The big news at Scotts has been the
catfish bite. Whiskerfish to 2 pounds are
being caught near the dam on ‘crawlers,
mackerel strips and pieces of hotdog.
SACRAMENTO AREA
Salmon Fishing Improves In
Metro Region
SACRAMENTO – The salmon fishing
is perking up as the fall Chinooks begin
to move through the Sacramento river in
the metropolitan area on their way to the
spawning grounds.
“Fishing has been pretty good over
the past few days,” said Alan Fong at
Fisherman’s Warehouse in Sacramento.
“Boaters are catching bright kings in the
8 to 30 lb. range while trolling Silvertron
spinners at the Brickyard, while jiggers
are catching fish while jigging below
Freeport.”
“The best salmon fishing is still at
Verona or below Freeport,” reported Uncle
Larry Barnes at Sacramento Pro Tackle.
