“There are anglers in three boats who
have reported limiting out on salmon
while trolling spinners and plugs below
Freeport. The boaters jigging below
the Freeport Bridge are also picking up
salmon while using Salmon Slammer
jigs.”
Barnes also noted that kayakers are
catching some Chinooks while drifting
salmon roe just above the bottom at the
Barge Canal in West Sacramento.
The Port of Sacramento is also kicking
out some stripers for anglers drifting
jumbo minnows, jigging spoons and
trolling with Yo-Zuris and other lures.
The best options for catfish remain
the Port, Sacramento Deepwater
Channel and Steelhead Creek in the
East Natomas Area. Anglers are using
mackerel, chicken livers and anchovies
to entice the cats. One angler brought in
a 12 lb. catfish that he caught on bait in
Steelhead Creek.

COYOTE – As normally happens in the
fall, the striped bass fishing is shifting into
high gear at San Luis Reservoir
“There is a good top water bite at times,”
reported Alex Tran at Coyote Bait and
Tackle. “Anglers are doing best on the
REDDING - The fishing is good at both
Lake Shasta and Whiskeytown Reservoir
at this time, but both fisheries are in a
state of transition.
At Lake Shasta
the lake level

As a result, boat
launching is easy in
all areas of the lake.

good results on trout that weigh up to
around 3 pounds. For us the bite has
been best in the arms near the main
body. I’ve been launching at Bridge Bay
and heading south to work fish that are
80 to 90 feet deep. There have also
been some kings showing up. Nothing
huge, but we’ve seen some solid
2-pound salmon.”
Bass anglers are working a familiar
late summer pattern. Early and late you
can hook fish on crankbaits, spinnerbait
and topwater lures, although this
action has slowed a little in recent days
because the surface temperature has
been dropping a bit.
The rest of the day soft plastic and
jigging spoons are the way to go. The
bass are moving up early and late, but
midday you’ll find them anywhere from
20 to 90 feet deep.
There haven’t been any reports of big
bass in recent days, but spots in the 1 to
2.5-pound range are common.
At Whiskeytown, the Whiskey Creek
section of the lake continues to boot out
late season kokanee and some of them
are large. 17 and 18-inch fish are being
caught with regularity and a 20 incher is
possible.

fish up to 20 pounds are being hooked,
most of the fish are shakers or smaller
keepers.”
Calero Reservoir is the one local lake
open to boating; Anderson and Coyote
reservoirs are both closed to boating, due
to low water levels.
“Boaters and shore fishermen are
picking up some decent largemouth bass
in the 2 to 5 pound range while using drop
shot rigs and dragging jigs off points,” he
said. “Throwing crankbaits is also worth a
shot.”
Uvas and Chesbro reservoirs are
producing some black bass, but the
catfishing is the top prospect there now.
Bank anglers are landing catfish ranging
from 2 to 10 pounds while tossing out
chicken livers and mackerel, noted Tran.
