was productive,” reported Fish Sniffer
publisher Paul Kneeland.
“While fishing the derby and pre-
fishing we got anywhere from 9 to 15
fish per day. We expected the trout to
be deep, but that wasn’t the case. The
rainbows were mainly in the top 20
feet of the water column. The lures we
usually use at Shasta weren’t working
that great, because the bait is very small
at this time,” he stated.
“On the final day of the derby I put
on the smallest Phoebe spoon in my
tackle box and got a hookup almost
immediately. I got a really big rainbow
to the boat and it came off at the last
second. A few minutes later I hooked
up again and landed a rainbow about 4
pounds. The fish were willing to bite, but
small lures were the key to consistent
strikes,” said Kneeland.
Looking forward, trout anglers can
expect the bite to get better and better
as the water temperature drops and
more trout and bait move to the surface.
There haven’t been many browns in
the mix recently, but that will change
too as the browns begin pushing up the
lake’s arms for their fall spawning run.
Bass anglers enjoying very good
fishing using dropshot rigs, Senkos and
spoons to tempt 20 to 40 bass per day in
the 10 to 14-inch class. For larger fish,
topwater lures produce early and late in
the day.

Kokanee Season Ends, Macks
Provide Excellent Action
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - Fall is a great
time to visit Lake Tahoe with chilly mornings
and beautiful blue sky afternoons. After
several weeks of outstanding kokanee
fishing, that bite is rapidly coming to an
end. Mackinaw fishing is very consistent
and the occasional rainbow and brown trout
are showing in the catches.
Tahoe Sportfishing skippers are putting
their clients on limits of macks ranging from
2 to 5 pounds daily. Minnows teamed with
dodgers and flashers have been the top
offering.
Tahoe Sportfishing boasts Lake Tahoe’s
only fishing fleet. These days boats are
departing daily from the Ski Run Marina at
the south end of the lake.
Kayakers and private boaters launching
at Cave Rock have been working the
shoreline with minnow plugs and Flatfish
for macks that range up to 8 pounds and
rainbows that top out at about 4 pounds
and browns that can go much larger.
Looking forward, deep water trolling will
be offering the most consistent fishing for
macks throughout the late fall and early
winter season. However, shallow trolling
should continue to improve as the surface
temperature continues to drop. These days
private boaters are
hooking 3 to 6 fish
per outing while
pulling plugs.
