REDDING
Rain and Wild
Rainbows on
Sacramento
REDDING - The best news is
that the Sacramento River’s big,
bad wild rainbows are feeding
heavily and cooperating with
anglers. The good but damp
news is that a fair amount of rain
has been pushing through the
north state recently, making for
some wet days on the water for
anglers that are determined to
fish rain or shine.
Fly anglers working from drift
boats are landing from 15 to 35

Target Port Stripers with
Spoons
SACRAMENTO – Anglers are
experiencing top-notch fishing on
stripers while working Bladerunner
spoons in the Port.
“It’s been insane for the past two
months,” said Rick Tietz of Bladerunner
Spoons. “There is a big school of
stripers about 3 to 4 miles up the
Sacramento Deepwater Channel that is
moving with the shad.”
“The best fishing has been in the
afternoons from 3 pm until dark,” he
said. “Last night I caught and released
around 20 keepers in the 3 to 8 pound
range while using 2 oz. spooners. The
fishing has been good except when a
ship comes through. I’m finding the best
action on the bigger fish with the 2 oz.
Bladerunner spoon in the dark green
color that Alan Fong came up with. The
key is to work the lure really slow near
the bottom so it looks like a mudsucker.”
“I move the lure and work it an angle
so it slowly flutters back to the boat. I
cast the lure as far as I can and start
pumping it through the school. When I
catch up in the boat with the school, then
I work the spoon up and down on the
bottom.”
Bill Young caught and released a 42
pound striper while fishing a 1-1/4 oz.

Salmon fishing in the Sacramento
River ended on December 16, but few
anglers were out trying in the last two
weeks of the season.
