What’s Hot
and caught a pansize rainbow within 30
seconds of putting a Mag Lip into the
water and dropping it down to 15 feet on
his Hybrid Leadcore rig.
After Wes and I met up on the water, we
worked the main body for a while power
fishing with Mag Lips and Trigger Spoons
with zero results before pushing up the
creek arm.
We found a concentration of rainbows
in the narrows adjacent to a good size
cove. I spotted a trout that looked to be 4
pounds take a bug off the surface and we
saw lots of marks from 15 to 30 feet deep.
There were a few scattered pods of shad
around too.
This was the spot. When you are strug-
gling and you find some trout that are
willing to feed, it’s time to grind on them
and figure out what you can show them
to generate strikes.
When they rejected our fast stuff, I told
Wes it was time to slow down and down
size. He rigged up with a small spoon
on his leadcore and dropped a threaded
Gulp! Worm down on his downrigger
teamed with a 6-inch dodger.
I went with a naked threaded worm on
one rod and a trolling fly on my second
leadcore rig.
10 minutes later I was on the board
when a solid 2.5-pound rainbow inhaled
my worm rolling at 20 feet.
Wes got a couple grabs on the Gulp!
that didn’t stick and on that note, we
broke for lunch.
Wes headed back to his van to cook.
One of the annoying aspects of hanging
out with Wes is that he eats 127,461
calories per day and never gains weight.
In contrast, if Lucy and I look at a
picture of a donut in a magazine we
each gain a pound. So, while Wes ate his
12,000-calorie lunch, Lucy and I went
swimming and shared an apple….
With lunch finished, it was time to get
serious. We peddled right back up to
our trout. Wes lead off with the trout I
described at the beginning of this piece
and we continued to have fair action for
the next couple hours.
I finished the day with our best fish,
a husky rainbow well over 3 pounds
that crushed a light-colored trolling
fly working at 15 feet just below the
powerlines.
Collins Lake had paid off for us once
again and I get the impression that things
are just getting started over there in terms
continued from page 1
of spring fishing. There are big numbers
of fish in the lake, but most of them are
off the bite. I suspect that in the next two
or three weeks, the switch will be thrown,
the rainbows will come to life in a major
way. When that happens, Collins will be
Hook Up City for bankers and boaters
alike.
And I’ll be there. Heck Lucy and I might
even break training for an ice cream treat.
I usually grab a cone, while the girls at the
ice cream counter make Lucy a cup with a
half scoop of vanilla, some ice chips and a
shot of whipped cream.
It’s good to be a Labrador!
