CALIFORNIA DELTA
Largemouth Bass Bite In Full Swing While Striper Bite Heats Up
SACRAMENTO - The largemouth bass bite is in full swing on the California Delta . Alex Mendleski , with Fisherman ’ s Warehouse , says , “ the South Delta has been fishing really well for anglers tossing frogs .” Mendklesi reported catching fish up to 7 ½ pounds on a black belly frog . He also reported that he has been catching 4 pounders consistently and on one recent trip caught 3 fish over 5lbs . According to Mendklesi , “ the best baits right now are a black belly frog , the Picasso Double Buzz Bait , flipping with a brush hog , and punching with a 1 ½ oz Reaction Innovation Sweet Beaver in Hit Man color .” He also noted that popper style baits and the River2Sea Bubble Walker are also great options . Trollers are starting to find good schools of striped bass while trolling the Sacramento River . Mark Wilson said , “ the troll bite has got good from the West Bank down to Broad Slough .” He also said , “ the quality of fish is really good right now and the month of August often produces big fish .” There is a lot of stripers in the SF Bay , California Delta and river systems and it is shaping up to be a great fall season .

DAVIS LAKE
Early Morning Trollers Are Landing Trout While Bass Have Started Biting
PORTOLA – The fires in the area produced some pretty nasty smoke around Davis Lake . The smoke has cleared and the area is now smoke free . Trout and bass fishing is solid for anglers fishing Davis Lake . “ Trolling early morning 15ft or deeper seems to be the ticket to catching trout . Trollers are having success using Baby Simons in green , red , or blue . Some boaters are anchoring around the island and fishing the bottom with PowerBait ,” said Jeanne Graham at J & J ’ s Grizzly Store and Camping Resort . “ Bank Anglers catching trout near Mallard Cove or Old Camp 5 while using PowerBait or worms .” The bass bite has also turned on at Davis Lake . Anglers are finding success while using soft plastics and frogs near Lightning Tree and Cow Creek . The docks are in at the Honker Cove , Lightning Tree and Old Camp Five boat ramps .

DON PEDRO LAKE
Slow Consistent Kokanee Bite
LA GRANGE – The recent full moon slowed the trout and kokanee bite but now that it is gone the bite is starting to pick up . Monte Smith of Gold Country Sportfishing reported , “ Don Pedro didn ’ t want to give it up easy as the full moon had its grips on us .” “ We still managed a good amount of fish for them to take home . They dropped some fish and we had many short strikes that were really undetectable . We could see them on live scope but not see them bite ,” said Smith . Smith says , “ he has been catching fish at 65-75 feet but has received some reports that fish are being caught at 80ft deep .” Pro-Troll Kokanee Killers and bigger profile baits with crawfish scent are working well since the fish are getting more aggressive . This is common when the kokanee are getting closer to spawn . Smith added , “ once you find the fish continue to circle around them and keep putting a lure in front of them and they will bite .”

EAGLE LAKE
Trout Bite Turns On
Eagle Lake was very slow fishing all through the month of June . The water was extremely murky , almost like pea soup with a visibility as little as two feet . In mid July that started to change . Tim Noxon of Fish Traveler Guide Service had a week of good fishing when the bite began to turn on for trollers . He had limits of “ October ” sized fish up to 4.8 pounds for several trips . The best tackle was Hot Pink spoons and red / gold Thomas Bouyants at 20-25 feet deep in water from 25 to 40 feet deep . Most fish were suspended five to ten feet off the bottom . You need to constantly adjusting your down riggers to keep your baits within that range . Tim mentioned two things he attributes the better fishing to : the water is clearing with visibility to 7 to 8 feet , and the
